Follow the Leader

  • Jun. 27th, 2008 at 3:24 PM
dance
I'm taking Salsa lessons, not just any Salsa lessons, but private lessons. It is truly a dream come true. I love every moment of it. My body is finally giving in and my extra left foot is slowly becoming a right one again. I can actually do all of the beginner moves without missing a bit and slowly moving along through the intermediate and club moves (check out "Tics and Wiggles", I can do it, yes I can!) ([info]50ml_martini, the link is specifically for you).

There is only one little problem... as with most other dances, the man is the leader and the woman is the follower. The man guides the woman by giving her "claves" (read little tugs, pushes, or checks) that let her know when to turn, dip, etc. I'm learning to follow, I have no choice (although I'm constantly telling my teacher that he is not teaching me right, if I can't lead in dance, I can at least lead in the teaching process). In my opinion, following is much harder then leading.

"In my opinion, following is much harder then leading"
о, ДА! и поверь мне, не только в танцах :)
а вообще, танцевать - это круто! может, я тоже сподоблюсь куда-нибудь записаться. вот только я все больше к bellydance тяготею...

Belly daning is cool and sexy. I was actually thinking about doing that next.

I agree. Once in class we didn't have enough followers (read: girls), and so I was a follower - it was awful! (Of course, it is also true that the leader wasn't that good.)

Cool, so intermediate and club moves. Borat says "Nice!"

Actually, now that I have progressed to more advanced moves and more advanced level, I have to say that leading correctly is not as easy as it looks. Guys have a hard job to do as well. If the turn is lead correctly, it's actually easy to perform. However, if it is not and mixed signals are sent (hand is in the wrong position, etc.), it's impossible to follow. Check this out:

The instructors on the video are from the studio I go to take my group lessons. As funny as it might sound, I take private lessons from a Russian guy :)

Well, you know it was an intro class: so my job was usually pretty easy - avoid follower's feet :0)
